Why Small Scope Works Better in Roblox Build
Keep the first version small by maintaining a scope ledger: what the core loop needs now, what can wait and what conflicts with the current prototype. A deferred feature is a recorded decision, not a hidden promise that it already exists.
Objective
Maintain a concrete included/deferred/rejected scope record for the current prototype.
Before you start
- State the interaction that the current version should make understandable.
- Collect proposed features without treating the list as an implementation promise.
- Have a way to record observations from the present attempt.
Steps
- Identify the action, feedback, ending and recovery needed for the current loop.
- Place indispensable features in Keep now and explain their role.
- Move optional additions into Defer with a later design question.
- Reject or separate features that contradict the current scope.
- Use the ledger as a boundary in follow-up requests.
- Review the next candidate addition only after checking the existing loop.
Verification
- Every Keep now item has a clear role in the intended interaction.
- Deferred features are not described as present in the current game.
- The next prompt has not silently reintroduced excluded systems.
- A scope change is recorded with a reason rather than hidden inside a cosmetic revision.
Limitations
- The ledger is editorial planning guidance, not an official Build quota or feature limit.
- Small prototypes can still contain defects and require inspection.
- Removing a feature from the plan does not automatically remove related state from an existing generated version; inspect the actual result.
Working notes
Begin with the player outcome rather than a feature allowance. There is no universal prompt size or subsystem count that makes a project appropriately small. Ask whether each requested element is necessary to perform the action, understand its feedback or recover for another attempt.
Put attractive but nonessential ideas into a separate backlog. A cosmetic shop, companion collection or extra world may be worth exploring later, but it should not prevent you from inspecting the current objective. Keeping the idea written down makes it easier to defer without smuggling it into every follow-up request.
Distinguish defer from reject-for-this-version. A persistent upgrade system might be deferred until the immediate loop is coherent. A mechanic that contradicts the current objective may need rejection or a separate prototype. These decisions explain why an addition stays out instead of treating every suggestion as equally urgent.
Revisit the ledger after a meaningful observation, not merely because the scene looks sparse. If the player cannot tell whether a delivery counted, improve completion feedback before adding another destination. If retry is reliable and the loop is understandable, the next addition can answer a new, explicit design question.
Examples
- Scope ledger for a courier route: Keep now—movement, parcel pickup, destination feedback and retry. Defer—costume choices and another route. Reject for this version—an open trading economy that changes the project's central interaction.
- Feature decision: A countdown belongs in the first version only if time pressure is part of the intended loop. If the current question is whether pickup and delivery are understandable, the timer adds a failure condition that may obscure that observation.
- Follow-up boundary: Improve the depot's completion feedback. Preserve movement, parcel pickup and reset behavior. Do not add upgrades, currency or another level as part of this revision.
Common questions
- Does keeping scope small mean abandoning the larger idea?
- No. Keep the larger idea in a backlog, but identify which interaction the present prototype is intended to test. Expand deliberately after recording what the current version taught you.
- How do I decide whether a feature belongs now?
- Ask whether the current action, feedback, ending or recovery requires it. If not, explain what later question it would answer and defer it until that question becomes relevant.
