Build Changed Gameplay but Not the Visuals
If a visual request changes gameplay instead, define the appearance difference separately from the interaction that must stay intact. Readability, palette, silhouette and decoration are presentation goals; wider passages, stronger rewards or different contact rules are behavioral changes unless intentionally requested.
Symptom
A cosmetic revision alters functional rules while leaving the intended visual difference unclear.
Immediate action
Name the appearance goal and list functional differences that were not requested.
Diagnostic branches
- The requested adjective could describe value, size or visibility.
- Specify the presentation property and preserve unrelated reward or geometry rules.
- The revision changed a usable route or qualification.
- Treat that as a separate restoration decision, not proof of successful styling.
- The visual trait is clearer but the preserved interaction has not been checked.
- Keep functional preservation unverified until the relevant safe observation exists.
Least-destructive change
Correct the specific visual property while explicitly restoring or preserving functional boundaries.
Retest
- The intended visual distinction is observable in the actual playing view.
- Passage, contact and reward rules remain as deliberately chosen.
- No unsupported asset control or exact reproduction is promised.
Escalation
Retain the separate appearance and behavior records if the correction remains mixed. A styling request is not evidence that a particular rendering capability exists.
Working notes
Identify the visual property that remains unsatisfied using a current observation. A request to make an item stand out might be interpreted as making it larger or more valuable. State whether recognition, contrast with the background or a distinguishable shape is the actual goal, without implying a reward or geometry change.
List the accidental gameplay differences separately. A decorative arch that becomes wider may alter the route; a brighter collectible that grants extra credit changes the economy. Do not silently retain those changes merely because they arrived with a cosmetic revision. Decide whether to reverse them while preserving any genuinely improved appearance.
Use a visual reference only when you can legitimately provide it and its relevant traits are explicit. Describe general contrast or composition rather than demanding protected imagery or an exact asset imitation. No particular image-input control, asset format or reliable visual reproduction is assumed here.
Verify the appearance in the state where the player needs to read it, then inspect the preserved interaction. A recognizable marker is useful only if the safe route remains passable and the intended action still has its original qualifying rule. Do not replace visual inspection with the assistant's assurance that styling changed.
Examples
- Desired presentation: distinguish the destination sign from background foliage at the actual playing view. Preserve the sign's location, the passable entrance and the delivery condition; do not increase the reward to make the sign seem more important.
- Accidental change record: appearance goal still unresolved; corridor width changed; original passage evidence available or unknown; intended correction is visual contrast while restoring the chosen passage boundary.
