Build Changed the Style but Not Gameplay

If a requested gameplay change produced only new colors or scenery, separate the behavior requirement from its mood words. Name the action, qualifying state and changed result that would demonstrate the mechanic. A more dangerous appearance does not establish a new hazard rule, and a victory banner alone does not establish completion logic.

Symptom

The result changes presentation while the intended player action or outcome remains unchanged.

Immediate action

Translate the intended mechanic into an observable qualifying-state contrast.

Diagnostic branches

The original request used only mood or difficulty adjectives.
Decide the actual rule rather than assuming the adjective specified it.
Feedback changed but the qualification did not.
Repair the qualification and inspect both eligible and ineligible states.
Useful styling was produced alongside the missing mechanic.
Preserve that presentation explicitly in the focused repair.

Least-destructive change

Add the missing behavioral boundary without discarding useful presentation work.

Retest

  • The requested result differs in the relevant qualifying state.
  • The contrasting state does not incorrectly gain the same outcome.
  • Preserved visual improvements remain observable.

Escalation

Use the behavior contrast if another revision remains style-only. It does not establish an internal rule implementation or guarantee prompt compliance.

Working notes

Read the original request for words that could describe either feeling or function. More challenging, rewarding or exciting can be satisfied visually without changing a rule because the intended rule was never stated. Keep the aesthetic improvement if it is useful, but do not count it as proof of the requested mechanic.

Specify a contrast that appearance cannot satisfy on its own. Before the required object is delivered, the exit remains unavailable; after delivery, the exit becomes usable. That contrast describes behavior, whereas make the exit look important does not. Use the actual intended design rather than borrowing a rule that changes the game's objective.

Identify what should remain from the visual result. A bounded correction can preserve the new color scheme and scene layout while changing the named qualification. Reissuing the whole original concept may replace the useful style again without clarifying the missing mechanical difference.

Inspect the interaction in the relevant state. An animation announcing success is insufficient if the player can still bypass the required action or the next step remains unavailable. Equally, do not require a new visual effect when the requested functional transition is already present and clear.

Examples

  • Style-only result: the hazard becomes darker after a request to make it dangerous, but the intended contact response is unchanged. Specify the authored contact outcome and safe contrasting state; do not assume darkness itself defines damage.
  • Repair brief: Preserve the new gate appearance. Keep it unavailable before parcel delivery and make the existing exit action usable afterward. Check both states instead of accepting a changed gate color as completion.
